The highly anticipated Android version of the ChatGPT app, developed by OpenAI, is set to hit the Google Play Store by the end of July. The app, which had been previously launched for iPhone users in May, will finally be available for Android enthusiasts. The app's Google Play Store listing is already live, and prospective users can pre-register to receive it immediately upon its release.
While it's yet to be confirmed whether the app will initially be released only in the US, as was the case with the iPhone version, the availability for pre-ordering from outside the US, including Asia, suggests that OpenAI might be planning a more extensive roll-out.
Android users currently using ChatGPT via web browsers can look forward to a better user experience with the dedicated app. The new app is designed to deliver a more intuitive interface and features specifically tailored for Android users. Taking a leaf from the iOS version's book, which saw the integration of Siri and Shortcuts, the Android app is expected to offer similar, if not more, enhancements.
In another significant development, OpenAI has been experimenting with an optional feature that would grant the ChatGPT bot a continuous memory. This feature, available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, will allow the chatbot to recall users from previous interactions, potentially making the conversation flow smoother. It's important to note that this feature, currently in the testing phase, is designed to function across all platforms.
More details will follow in the coming days as the release of the ChatGPT Android app draws near. It will be interesting to see if OpenAI will somehow be able to keep people using their product, with many alternatives o the market, especially after Meta also open-sourced it's Llama 2 even for commercial use.
